The patient's eye (outer canthus) should be at the level with the alignment mark on the headrest to the examiner's right. The chinrest should be adjusted by turning the chinrest elevation control on the headrest to the examiner's left.
The patient should be asked to grasp the instrument by the hand grips on the bottom of the vertical bar of the chinrest so the patient will stay as still as possible during the measurement.
